          Homework

Homework is a valuable and vital part of learning. We do not prescribe what homework should be set by teachers but we do say that it must be set.

Whilst homework might occasionally be to finish off work set in class, this should not mean that only those who were slowest get homework. If homework is worth doing, it is a task or activity that is worth doing for everyone and helps to consolidate learning and/or to move learning forward.

          Year 13 homework calendar

          Years 7-8

Homework will be set weekly in the following subjects:

          • English
          • Maths
          • Science
          • History
          • Geography
          • Languages
          • Computer Science

This homework will last up to one hour in each subject. Students will also be expected to read their academy reading book and quiz on it on a weekly basis. Other subjects will set homework as appropriate.

          Years 9-11

All subjects in which students are being examined will set homework every week. Homework will last at least one hour per subject and this will increase as students move up the school.

          Some examples

Some examples of valid homework activities might include:

          •             Learning key information/facts

          •             Extended writing assignments

          •             Reading tasks to prep for a forthcoming lesson

          •             Consolidation exercises

          •             Research/project work

          •             Developing practical work

Homework will always be collected and always assessed/marked. Learning homeworks can be assessed through the five question test done regularly at the start of lessons. Students should get four or five out of five to be considered to have passed.

It will always be highlighted in exercise books by labelling it as homework clearly on the page.

Staff set homework on My Day so that parents can support students with homework and also see the record of homework set for their daughter.  The academy also uses this as a method of checking homework being set.

          Homework detention

Failure to do the homework set by the deadline (or pass the five question test) will result in teachers logging this on eportal.  Three and then all subsequent missed homeworks will result in House Homework Detention.

This takes place on Wednesday evenings. House Assistant Principals oversee these and will ensure that parents are alerted via a text message. Students will be expected to attend and will be picked up for a longer detention if they do not attend.

A build-up of detentions will result in further sanctions which will be co-ordinated at a House level.

          Years 12-13

Students should expect to do as much private study as they do lessons in any subject. Therefore, most students will expect to receive five hours of additional work and study in each subject they take.
